How can one ever win life if one never dares to risk it? This question lies at the heart of Stefan Zweig's novella, which still surprises us today with its urgency. Triggered by an observation, Mrs. C. recalls a fateful moment in her own life. In the safe confines of a conversation with a stranger, she begins to tell her story …
In 24 hours, Mrs. C. experiences more love, danger, humanity, betrayal, and insight than in all the decades before. Stefan Zweig skillfully portrays her story, which stands for the whole in its individuality. Caught in the conflict between convention and identity, Mrs. C. is an exemplar of the yearning for inner and outer freedom. Her narration reminds us that we are only truly alive when we dare the unknown – surrendering ourselves to the flow of life.
For the stage, this story is a gift: Before us unfolds a fluid, playful world that draws us into the depths of human passion and fragility. Stefan Zweig's vibrant text transforms into an atmospheric experience in a dramatization by Thomas Kahry, inviting us to dance, to take risks, to live!
