Bullet For My Valentine
Matt Tuck describes the creation of every Bullet For My Valentine album as a “journey”. Each, the frontman attests, is about capturing the essence of a moment in time; a freeze-frame snapshot of its creators and the world around them. Nothing forced, nothing scripted, nothing disingenuous. “Let life and our experiences set the course,” Tuck says, with a knowing wisdom.
This is the way Bullet For My Valentine has grown accustomed, a purity of creation that it’s impossible to argue with – and with good reason, too. Three decades into their career, Bullet For My Valentine have established themselves as one of Britain’s all-time most celebrated rock and metal exports, who fought tooth and nail from humble roots in Bridgend, south Wales to become a truly global phenomenon. There are the multimillion album sales, multibillion streaming numbers, multiple Gold certifications at home and abroad, plus three UK Album Chart and Billboard 200 Top 10 placements. And there’s the regular appearances on the biggest stages across the globe, including a thunderous headline performance at London’s gargantuan O2 Arena. Yet remarkably, those accolades still only go some way to telling the story of their influence and impact.
The culmination of those experiences and achievements is writ large across ‘Social Apocalypse’, their eighth full-length, which arrives on March 19th via the esteemed Spinefarm. It’s a 10-track set that comprises a lifetime’s learnings and inspirations, and which definitively captures every facet of the Bullet For My Valentine sound in masterfully-honed results. It’s an album, Tuck notes, coloured by “light and shade” that is at once “clean and dirty”, “intense and cinematic”. “I feel like this will be Bullet fans’ ultimate record, as it pulls together sounds and ideas from every chapter of our story while continuing to push them into new territory,” he says.
There is a not-so-quiet confidence to ‘Social Apocalypse’ that is engrained in its very fabric. While the early part of the album’s six-year gestation period was defined by the conflicting emotions of personal hardship before the all-conquering 20-year celebration of iconic debut album ‘The Poison’ that saw the band play the biggest shows of their lives, the longest wait for a Bullet album ever was also the product of the knowledge that good things come to those who wait. “Our last, self-titled record (2021) felt like the beginning of something new for us,” Tuck says. “The Bullet today is far more confident and has so much more self-belief in who we are. We’ve never before been so sure in who we are and what we’re capable of. We carry a freedom to be what we want to be and what we want to create, and to be utterly fearless in doing so. A lot of bands – including ourselves once upon a time – would see six years between records as something to be afraid of. We saw it as an opportunity.”
As such, ‘Social Apocalypse’ has not been willed into existence under the pressure of frantic deadlines and the mechanisms of a demanding industry; rather, it’s been finely crafted with razor-sharp precision. Where prior Bullet albums would be created from a pool of 20, even 30 potential tracks, ‘Social Apocalypse’ saw vocalist/guitarist Tuck, guitarist Michael “Padge” Paget, bassist Jamie Mathias and drummer Jason Bowld quickly identify the dozen or so ideas they were most instinctively enamored by, and forgo the rest. “Rather than burn ourselves out creatively on songs that would never see the light of day,” Tuck says, “we instead spent all our energy on making those select songs the very best they could possibly be. I think the results vindicate that approach.”
Working once more with producer Carl Brown – a veteran of four Bullet albums, alongside work with Sleep Token, While She Sleeps, Malevolence and more – the idea for each track was diligently scrutinised, constructed and polished to its immaculate final form. “Carl doesn’t let you settle,” Tuck notes. “He is always ready to speak up, push and challenge you to be the best version of you.”
Tuck may choose to leave it to others to decide if the album is indeed the band’s career best – he has long since learned to let go of the trappings of comparison and criticism – but he is defiant in his assertion that it is Bullet at their most natural. Reminiscent of the band’s storied past without ever being repetitive of it, it’s with a steely-eyed determination to break new ground that the beloved hallmarks of Bullet For My Valentine past and present – Acid Rain and Fragile’s rapid-fire riffage, the melodic sensibility of Masquerade and Never Enough, and the anthemic balladry of Read Between The Lines and Here Without You – are refocused and reenergised for the future. They’re made easy bedfellows, too, by the sheer expertise of songwriting. “That has always been at the heart of Bullet,” Tuck nods. “It can be dressed up as a classical piano piece or an extreme metal track, but the song has to come first. It’s our job to simply let them grow and find their own final form.”
Thematically, ‘Social Apocalypse’ combines the bare-faced lyrical introspection of people weathered and worn by the modern world with wide-eyed observations on a planet that feels as if it is coming off the rails at every turn. “Everything in life is changing at such a rapid pace, and it is hard to find a great deal of positivity when you look at events in the world,” Tuck says. “People are being pitted against each other. The world is full of conflict instead of unity. As a father, I look at what the world is like for younger people, and how completely different it is now.”
On the title track, Tuck rages against “the end of the world as we know it”, when “all hope has faded”. On Read Between The Lines, he spits “we can’t call this living, we’re barely existing”. I Don’t Trust Tomorrow, meanwhile, declares there to be “No hope, no plan, no future”. That track – a reflection on “the fear of the unknown, where we’re heading and the fear and anxiety that brings”, which Tuck labels likely the heaviest Bullet song ever – arrives with a hair-raising vocal turn from Lorna Shore’s Will Ramos. It makes for one of two collaborations on ‘Social Apocalypse’ – a rarity for Bullet that brings thrilling new dynamics to the record – with Against The Current vocalist Chrissy Costanza also stepping in to duet on In The Absence Of You.
The songs reflect the "extremities of emotions” in the modern world, Tuck says. “Life is an incredible thing, but it’s not always a bed of roses,” the frontman says. “There are moments you feel on top of the world, and moments you feel at the bottom, and I wanted ‘Social Apocalypse’ to reflect the full dynamic of that experience.” The epic ballad Here Without You (“Keep on feeling like I’ve lost myself / sometimes just wanna be someone else”) encapsulates such duality – a song written with "the foresight for embarking on the next chapter in Bullet, and the personal cost that chasing your dream has on your life”.
Three decades in, those dreams burn as brightly as ever before, and Bullet For My Valentine enters the dawning of a new era with the same burning drive and vision as ever. “We’re as hungry and feral to bring new music to the fans as they are to hear it,” Tuck nods. “There truly is no better feeling.”
