Following the great success of CATS, the Vereinigte Bühnen Wien presents one of the most famous musicals of all time - Andrew Lloyd Webber's THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA - back to Vienna. Artistic Director Christian Struppeck is bringing Cameron Mackintosh's spectacular new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, which has never been seen in the German-speaking world, to the Raimund Theater from spring 2024.

The brand-new staging of the world-famous masterpiece has already been sold out in Great Britain, the USA, and Australia, where it was recently seen at the prestigious Sydney Opera House. The Austrian premiere will take place on March 15, 2024.

In 2022, Luka Šulić stepped back from the intense touring schedule of 2Cellos to make space for creativity and to focus on family life - he has recently welcomed his fourth child. For the new album LIFE, released on Platoon on 22 March, Luka returned to his compositional roots to create music with an evocative sound world, enriched with luscious harmonies, soaring strings, and a cello line of transcendent beauty.

Luka’s musical foundation was built upon original composition and an innate skill in instrumental arrangements - this album is his debut as a composer and arranger. From a young age, he began developing works for solo cello, and he has always been drawn to the rich, expressive sound world of a string orchestra - a sound able to take the listener to greater emotional depths. The tracks on this album are from ideas that have been gradually forming for many years, and given space to nurture, they have evolved into Luka’s musical depiction of LIFE.

In the morning, Mr. K. wakes up and two men explain to him that he is under arrest. He insists on his innocence to the supervisor but does not know who has accused him and why. They do not take him away. Everything is as it always is, yet something is different.

He tries to forget everything and continues with his daily work as a bank clerk. Eventually, he goes to a summons from the court and is confronted with a labyrinthine, all-encompassing bureaucratic system that destroys him.

The trained jurist Franz Kafka sketches in his novel a justice system that creates injustice, whose representatives pretend to dispense justice, adhere to no law, follow their own interests, and decide arbitrarily. In these nightmarish scenes, powerful figures prevail who are elusive and determine everything. No one can free themselves from the alleged guilt, the looming punishment, or the helpless dependence on these representatives of justice.

Franz Kafka wrote his childhood from his soul. He told of his family in which the father despotically controlled everything. Wanting something for oneself was impossible; only the father's wishes mattered. The character of Mr. K. is a personality tormented by his own feelings of guilt, without having committed any wrongdoing. These groundless self-accusations create the necessity to submit to a power in order to free oneself from unconscious guilt.

Really good rock needs a strong backbone and fine nerves: powerful stability and sensitivity. Ron Spielman has both. The guitarist, singer, and composer combines intricate songwriting at the highest level with the joyful directness of rock, and has been doing so for over 40 years.

This is evidenced by his 15 released albums under his own name. He has blues and soul, funk and jazz as well, but what is truly exciting is the space between the genres, which Ron plays on the rock stage with ease. His credo: "For me, music is special when it offers enough space within itself: Everyone is allowed to enter and, in a wonderful way, find exactly what they have always been looking for." This personal "parallel world" is opened up by Spielman with modern rock songs: touching and compellingly authentic, massive and delicate, anthemic and occasionally ballad-like intimate.
His new album “Lifeboat” stretches fine, clear melodic arcs over a rich, unobtrusive foundation. With sharply accented riffs and gently swaying choruses, he lyrically explores modern society, with all its ups and downs.
His range and experience are enormous. Ron worked, among other things, for seven years as the musical director of the live band on SAT.1 breakfast television. He accompanied stars like Tommy Emmanuel, Bootsy Collins, Beth Hart, or Jamie Oliver. He sang live with Stevie Wonder and shared the stage with the Chick Corea Electric Band and Johnny “Guitar” Watson.
“I have lived and loved my music my whole life,” he says. His goal: to draw listeners into his music, “so they realize with amazement that from the very first note, they are completely at home in it.” His target audience is large: “People who have grown up on the side without ever wanting to,” he explains. From Mozart To ….. Gottfried Gfrerer & Martin Spengler

Why Gfrerer and Spengler? And how does Texas come to Vienna or Vienna to Texas? Questions upon questions, which are all easily answered. The two musicians probably share more than they themselves are aware of.

Timeless texts, whether in German or English, sophisticated compositions with the lightness of being and brilliant guitar playing. And so it happened, as it had to happen, that both settled, guided by fate, in the same street of the federal capital. "Vienna – Texas" was born.

Gottfried David Gfrerer, arguably Europe’s best slide guitarist, and singer-songwriter Martin Spengler, who, even without his typical Viennese flair, is a creator of great, touching songs, with their duo program "Vienna – Texas" - a new dimension - between English singer-songwriter and Austrian dialect song of the new generation. The songs of this program span from the Danube wetlands over the Vienna Woods, the Alps to the Appalachians and the Mississippi Delta to the Mexican border area.

On one hand, there are Gottfried D. Gfrerer’s own songs, virtuously picked blues and folk songs that radiate calm, wisdom, and wit, deeply rooted in the tradition of Mississippi John Hurt, Blind Willie Johnson but also in modern fingerstyle. Sung by someone who has nothing more to prove to the vast world of guitarists from New York to London.

They meet Martin Spengler’s songs, which sound much less Viennese here, for as a great singer-songwriter in his highly poetic dialect language strikes very different notes than with the typical Viennese flair. Folk and country songs in the tradition of an early Bob Dylan or Woody Guthrie, yet grounded in Vienna, which, like all the folk songs of this world, speak of love, death, and other worries.

In between, there are alpine, Viennese approaches to Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, or Blind Lemon Jefferson. Gottfried D. Gfrerer and Martin Spengler manage this in between with the necessary lightness and depth. Two "smart" musicians in the sense of wise and good!

Alex Kristan has turned 50, or as the optimist within him says: "The first third of life is over." His motto, on the other hand, is: "being sensible is like being dead, but before" and brings back the cheeky kid.

Exactly at that pivotal point in life, where the balance lies between looking well-groomed and being well taken care of, one asks oneself if everything really was better in the past and if so, why not? Shortsightedness is now compensated with foresight, and as long as the cake is more expensive than the candles on it, one is not old anyway.

Alex Kristan's alter egos naturally accompany him on this journey and are there to provide advice and assistance when it comes to the truly essential questions in the life of a man supposedly in his best years. It's a start-up into a new phase of life, where gout or truth is at stake.

The British punk and New Wave pioneers The Godfathers are heading into the next round. Following the great success of their "Birth, School, Work, Death Anniversary Tour 2023" and their 2024 tour, they are coming in 2025 to celebrate their 40th band anniversary with a new program on the big "40th Anniversary Tour"!

40 years, 9 studio albums, old and new classics - the New Wave trailblazers led by frontman Peter Coyne can look back on a spectacular career. With their second album "Birth School Work Death," The Godfathers laid the foundation for the punk and New Wave sound of the 90s in the late 80s and are still considered groundbreaking for numerous bands - Die Ärzte for example, just to name one prominent example.

With their "40th Anniversary Tour," they embark on a journey through time across the band's extensive discography and a corresponding best-of set spanning four decades.

Iphigenie, daughter of Agamemnon, has been living in exile on Tauris for over ten years as a priestess of Diana. The goddess brought her there after her father attempted to sacrifice her. The Taurian king Thoas wants to marry her. When Iphigenie rejects his advances, he reinstates the law that she had abolished, to sacrifice all foreigners who arrive on Tauris to Diana. The first person to be affected by this barbaric new law turns out to be Iphigenie's brother Orestes. He wants to free his sister, if necessary by force, and take her back to Mycenae or - if necessary - flee with her secretly. She refuses both and through a persistent dialogue convinces Thoas to let her go in friendship.

With Iphigenie auf Tauris, Goethe created a classic drama, famous (and infamous) for its strict iambs and the intricately condensed plot with extensive mythological overlay. After all, Iphigenie comes from the cursed lineage of the Tantalides, and the brutal war over Troy is more than just background noise. Iphigenie's conflict becomes a mirror of our own moral uncertainties and a symbol of the search for an ethical compass in an increasingly complex world. Created in 1787, it is a surprisingly modern piece of theater, reflecting a multifaceted image of the present.

Directed by Anna Stiepani, a young director is staging for the first time in Klagenfurt, who has recently attracted attention with works at theaters like the Burgtheater, with Johan Simons at the Schauspielhaus Bochum, or at the Theater Meiningen.

Comedy solo of the other former Gebrüder Moped 10 Deka Liebe, bitte! - Should I pack it or will it go straight through the stomach? Please wrap it up! It goes through marrow and bone. Ruthless satire, lovingly entwined with purring and fun against the terrible and for the beautiful. Or the other way around, depending on mood and overall situation. For 15 years, Franzalander was part of the cabaret duo "Gebrüder Moped" until the two made a stir in 2024 with something that is too often sought in this country in vain: resignation. Now the former brother celebrates his solo debut with the program "10 Deka Liebe, bitte", in which he unyieldingly confronts his anger at the madness of this world with love. Love, and the humor lurking within it, may not take the seriousness out of catastrophes, crises, and other scratches on the screen, but perhaps it can take away the horror. Franzalander, the most beloved scamp since there has been a delivery service for love letters.

Shakespeare died in 1616, but his contribution to world literature remains alive and relevant to this day.

The composition by Sergei Prokofiev clearly and faithfully follows the plot of the play, and is considered one of the highlights of his musical work. The diverse instrumentation and the rhythmic complexity of the score still present challenges for orchestras and dancers.

Karl Markovics, born in 1963 in Vienna, is one of the "character faces" of German-speaking cinema with his distinctive features. His career began in the 1980s on stage at the Serapion Theater, and to this day, Markovics regularly appears at the most important theaters in Vienna.

Markovics took on his first film roles at the beginning of the 1990s and subsequently acted in numerous TV and theater productions, including at the Theater in der Josefstadt and at the Wiener Volkstheater, where in 2005 he also directed a play for the first time, Eugène Ionesco's "The Bald Soprano".

His greatest international success in recent years was probably the lead role in Stefan Ruzowitzky's film "The Counterfeiters", which was awarded "Best Foreign Language Film" at the 2008 Academy Awards. In the feature film "The Devil's Mistress" by Czech director Filip Renč about the life of the controversial Czech actress diva Lída Baarová, Markovics plays the lead role of Baarová's lover, Joseph Goebbels. The film was primarily shot in the Czech Republic from April to June 2015 and celebrated its world premiere in January 2016 in Prague. In the film "Murer – Anatomy of a Trial," presented at the Diagonale in 2018, he portrays Simon Wiesenthal.

In 2011, Karl Markovics made his debut as a director and screenwriter with the feature film "Breathing". The production received recognition at the 64th Cannes Film Festival as well as at the 2012 Austrian Film Awards. In 2015, he followed with his second film "Superworld", and then he directed the third: "Nobadi", which premiered in cinemas in 2019. At the Bregenz Festival in 2018, he directed the world premiere of the opera "The Hunting Rifle" composed by Thomas Larcher, marking his debut as an opera director.

Experience an evening as it could have been in 1790: the Baroque hall bathed in candlelight, a menu based on historical recipes, artists dressed in Mozart-era clothing, and compositions by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart performed in the highest musical quality. The dinner and concert take place in the excellent acoustics of the historic Baroque hall of St. Peter. This location is easily accessible in the heart of Salzburg at the Stiftskulinarium St. Peter, which looks back on a 1200-year tradition and was first mentioned in a document in the year 803. The Mozart family also frequented this place, as evidenced by an entry in Nannerl Mozart's diary in 1783.

She is loud, flashy, colorful, and above all one thing - FEMALE! As a styling expert in the service of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation, she is not only known for her crazy outfits but also for her humorous remarks far beyond the borders of Austria.

So it was only a matter of time before this power woman took to the domestic cabaret stages! In 2025 it will happen - the minister of belly, legs, and buttocks makes her debut with the sonorous cabaret program “A Butt Rarely Comes Alone”.

What can the audience expect? Well, exactly that! Lots of femininity and a colorful, flashy evening full of laughter that could almost count as a workout session for the belly. Laughter has always been the best medicine. Whether Martina will be elected the new health minister by the end of the evening, or simply remain the undisputed feel-good guarantor of women and the lover of women in their prime, remains to be seen.

“A Butt Rarely Comes Alone” is by no means only made for women, as men will also get their money's worth here and get to know women in a humorous way from a completely new perspective. Skiverliebt - Zwei Brettln, die die Welt bedeuten

With charm and ski, the new musical tells of one of the greatest passions in Austria: skiing. The occasion of the 2025 Ski World Championships in the Salzburg region, the Austrian gene of hospitality, and the pressure in professional skiing are the ingredients for the musical "Skiverliebt."

At the center of the story is the local ski racer Anna. She jets around the world and continually exceeds herself: Anna is the star on skis. But the announcement that the Ski World Championships will take place in her hometown plunges her into emotional chaos. Her ski instructor boyfriend Franz, the (un)frozen journalist Hanna from Hamburg, the WC organizing chief Joe, the Brazilian ski champion Camilla, and the melancholic snowcat driver Leopold also add to this chaos. The tourist guests are always there too, because Saturdays mean "bed change." Luckily, Jessica's hotel serves the best Kaiserschmarrn in the world to comfort everyone.

The setting of the 2025 Ski World Championships in the winter sports resort of Saalbach-Hinterglemm is the backdrop and inspiration for the story, where the joy of skiing, natural beauty, and tourism intersect. If "Im weißen Rössl" is the most beautiful Austrian summer operetta, then the commissioned work of the "two planks that mean the world" aims to become the Austrian winter musical. Martin Lingnau contributes a score written for a full orchestra, where besides Austro-pop songs, waltz delight, après-ski hits, and other exciting melodies come together.

Martin Lingnau is one of the most successful German-speaking composers. In Salzburg, his music was heard in the musical "Der Schuh des Manitu." Lyricist Frank Ramond has worked for Barbara Schöneberger, Annett Louisan, and Udo Lindenberg. Authentic dialogues are provided by the Austrian author Anna Lukasser-Weitlaner, who grew up in the winter sports paradise of East Tyrol.

Musical professional Andreas Gergen, following the evergreen "The Sound of Music" and the premiere of "Rock Me, Amadeus" by Falco, now presents a new musical with a strong Austrian focus for its premiere. The Second Kapellmeister Tobias Meichsner conducts the Mozarteumorchester.

Christoph Strasser - Der Weg ist weiter als das Ziel 2.0

Ultra cyclist Christoph Strasser is familiar with the highs and lows. Two race withdrawals due to illness in the Race Across America, a serious training accident, and the cancellation of the 24-hour world record attempt on a race track in Colorado due to COVID-19 have left their mark on the 6-time Race Across America and 4-time Race Around Austria winner. In this multimedia presentation, he shares how to stay motivated despite setbacks, how to summon the motivation to cover nearly 5000 kilometers in just 8 days on the RAAM, and how he became the first person to ride over 1000 kilometers in 24 hours. Additionally, Christoph Strasser will talk about his new challenge he undertook in July 2022: participating in the Transcontinental Race, the most prestigious "unsupported Ultracycling Race" that took participants over 4000 kilometers from Belgium to the Bulgarian coast of the Black Sea. In contrast to the RAAM, he was without a support team that usually accompanies, provides for, and motivates him around the clock. Luggage transport, navigation, provisions, and break strategies must be completely self-reliant and without outside help. With this, Christoph stepped out of his comfort zone and faced a new and unfamiliar challenge.

Impressive images, emotional videos, and entertaining anecdotes complement his presentation, which is not only interesting for athletes and cyclists, but also provides tips and insights on motivation, goal setting, and the importance of a well-coordinated team for everyone.

The morning exercise gives you an insight into the training work of the riders with their Lipizzaner horses. You will see both the training of the often still gray young stallions, as well as the already trained school stallions – our "white stars" – in the imperial ambiance of the baroque Winter Riding School, accompanied by classical Viennese music.

The gymnastics of the horses includes loosening exercises, refining and perfecting lessons, as well as targeted muscle strengthening. The famous school jumps, presented as part of the performances, are only sometimes seen during the morning exercise to spare the animals. Each stallion is trained according to his individual level of training, up to the High School lessons.

John Steinbeck describes in his timeless masterpiece a society in which the law of the strongest prevails mercilessly, and those who are already oppressed are continually pitted against each other and driven into loneliness. At the same time, it is a touching story about a friendship against all odds – and about the tender promise of happiness, which seems possible whenever one hopes together and defies the reality with imagination.

The later Nobel Prize winner Steinbeck himself worked as a migrant worker in his youth. His novel Of Mice and Men, published in 1937, was originally conceived as a screenplay and theater piece and has been adapted into films multiple times.

Peer Gynt is a theatrical figure that has long become a myth – an egocentric dreamer, visionary, liar, an anti-hero as well as an identification figure in a world gone mad, which has lost all measure. As a young man, Peer Gynt departs from his Norwegian homeland and embarks on a journey through continents and through the self, hovering between dream and reality and always in search of his identity and his role in life. He traverses mountains and deserts, crosses seas and rivers, and encounters mythical beings from other worlds. He comes to wealth in America, experiences himself as a spiritual person in Africa, and eventually has himself crowned emperor in a psychiatric hospital in Egypt. At the end of his life, having returned to his homeland, Peer Gynt must realize that he has lived past the true life, has become an average person like everyone else, and only a long-forgotten love can save him from meaninglessness.

As an epic of a "self-actualizer," Henrik Ibsen wrote with the “dramatic poem” PEER GYNT in 1867 a key text about the modern human. The restlessness and urgency with which Peer Gynt adopts and experiments with life concepts, takes on and leaves behind identities, taps into creative potential, and incurs guilt through greed and megalomania confronts us with our fragile existence and enables us to engage with our own dreams and longings, fears and hopes.

With a small ensemble and Mavie Hörbiger in the title role, the Icelandic director Thorleifur Örn Arnarsson embarks on an exploration of the central question of the text: Who am I? Am I a beggar or an emperor? Am I the beginning or the end?

Born in Sardinia, Daniela Pes is a singer-songwriter, musician, and composer with a background in jazz that allows her great artistic freedom. With an avant-garde approach, she blends tradition with innovation, creating a sound that is absolutely moving and timeless.
She sings in an invented language, and her deeply touching, rhythmically and vocally complex music has an almost religious character. Her music sounds like a kind of soundstream that meanders between traditional Sardinian folk, electronics, and experimental music. During her concerts, Daniela Pes stands alone on stage, operating her Microfreak synthesizer and enchanting the audience with her powerful voice. Her debut album, released in 2023, was celebrated as the best Italian album of the year and rightly received the prestigious Tenco Award for the best debut work.

Liliom is a barker at the carousel in the amusement park – a loud, rough, and yet irresistible suburban Casanova. The play, with which the visually striking film and theater director Philipp Stölzl presents himself for the first time at the BURG, was created in 1909 during the final phase of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. It tells of a time of social upheaval, in which poor and exploited people begin to emancipate themselves. Yet Liliom's liberation blows unfortunately lead him into the underworld of gamblers and petty criminals: A friend persuades him to commit a robbery. But it goes wrong... and in the end, nothing and nobody comes to his aid. Not even heaven.
