In its new program, the Trio Belli-Fischer-Rimmer dedicates itself to the great master and his final work: The Art of Fugue. An evening of epic sonic architecture, improvisation, counterpoint, and pulsating vitality!

The Art of Fugue is performed in various sonic garments, on piano and organ, with string or saxophone quartet all the way to a large symphony orchestra. The greatness of this last score by Johann Sebastian Bach lies particularly in the impressive abstraction of form and material, which is brought to the point here and yet in no way simply trumpets hermetically as a lineup of contrapuntal techniques, but touches us as pure music, as an immediate sonic form of spiritual power. The trio approaches it in its very own way: inspiring interactions between today's perspective and origin, historical performance practices and contemporary playing culture emerge, and they make the work, about 270 years old, appear like an archaeological find in a new, present light. For this evening, Bach's music will be juxtaposed with the sound world of the Austrian composer Georg Friedrich Haas.

On January 27th, a boy was born in Salzburg who would soon astonish the world. He was baptized as Joannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart, but he mostly referred to himself as Wolfgang Amadeus, translating the Greek "beloved of God" into lively French, sometimes also as Amedeo, as he also enjoyed the sonorous Italian. The German "God-lover" seemed too plain to him, and the Latin "Amadeus" too formal – the latter was bestowed upon him by posterity, turning it into a "brand." His birthday has become somewhat of a fixed holiday in the music world. His music is centuries old and yet still young, bold, and profound. It transcends all "brands." This time, two of his chamber music masterpieces are framed by a gem from his contemporary Franz Danzi, one of the first "Mozart conductors," and Beethoven's almost Mozartian joyful E-flat major piano sonata.

Jazz im HdM: Florian Bramböck & Klaus Schubert

Live in concert, the duo presents their debut album. Here is the official press statement: JAZZ//METAL is, in the best sense, a "strange" and absolutely individual work by two Tyrolean musicians from otherwise rather contrasting musical spheres! The idea for this highlight was born in the summer of 2020 after several joint performances in the direction of "Blues-Rock-Session & more." At the time of the announcement of the joint SCHUBERT & BRAMBÖCK project, the planned undertaking was still skeptically smiled upon by connoisseurs of music culture - now the impressive result is available on record. Conclusion: Klaus Schubert and Florian Bramböck present with their long player "Jazz//Metal" a veritable crossover surprise! And as is usually the case with Schubert's band projects, illustrious guests from various factions are of course involved this time as well.

Academie Konzert: Mozart 1770

Joseph Haydn was the father of the Viennese Classical School and the "second father" of Wolfgang Amadeus, who became the most popular of all composers. But who else was there in the second half of the 18th century? The so-called "Little Masters" were often just as well-known as the "Greats" at the time and were often highly esteemed by the latter. Mozart was a good friend of the 19 years older but also tragically deceased Czech Josef Mysliveček, who was called "il divino boemo," the "divine Bohemian," in Italy - and even arranged his early classical music. He had the fine minuets of the "Salzburg Haydn" Johann Michael, a kind of honorary uncle for "Wolferl," in his luggage on his trip to Italy. Michael's "big brother," in turn, enthusiastically performed the symphony by Joseph Martin Kraus in Eisenstadt, which is on our program for the first time. The Franconian Kraus not only shares the all-too-short lifespan with Mozart, but as a celebrated court kapellmeister in Stockholm, he was a luminary. With Howard Arman, a charismatic musician of our time, takes the podium of the TSOI.

HdM in Concert: Ensemble konsTellation

When people spoke about Bach in Mozart's time, they were not referring to Johann Sebastian, but rather his sons Johann Christian in London and especially Carl Philipp Emanuel, who was initially active in Berlin and then in Hamburg as Telemann's successor. "CPE" was a man of "Sturm und Drang" and Enlightenment, a daring avant-garde of his time, admired by Klopstock and Lessing, by Haydn and Mozart - "he is the master, we are the boys," as the latter said. His symphonies, as short as they were exciting, explored "foreign worlds" of new sonic possibilities at that time, just as the great Austrian Georg Friedrich Haas does in the present, for example in his Piano Concerto with 20 strings. "CPE" ventured into dissonant chromatics, Haas into the world of overtones and the magic of microtonality. In between stands Alfred Schnittke, the German-Russian master of polystylism, whose ingenious and witty homage to the Viennese classics is a declaration of love to the timelessness of great music.

Jazz im HdM: Wolfgang Mitterer: 437 Hertz (UA)

The Austrian Wolfgang Mitterer is one of the most successful representatives of live electronics and an innovative and joyful transgressor of musical boundaries, who has proven himself as a polystylist in his diverse works and projects ranging from new forms of opera, creative stage music, unusual orchestral pieces, experiments with various ensembles, compositions for mass choirs and wind bands, as well as applied sound and video art. He does not shy away from a solid quote as much as from his own melodic ideas and techniques of contemporary music between avant-garde and pop. When asked if he is not spreading himself too thin, he responds quickly: "No, I am sitting on my own chair." This time, he will engage intensively with the music of the great Johann Sebastian Bach. A year before the premiere, this is, of course, still a "work in progress," for which the composer still envisions alternative titles: "with bach," "open room," "variations 2025," "flying surround" ... an exciting evening is guaranteed!

Johann Sebastian Bach's work on the two-part Well-Tempered Clavier, the collection of 24 preludes and fugues each, spanned three decades. The first part was completed in 1722. In the preserved autograph, it is written in a carefully clear handwriting: "Das Wohltemperirte Clavier oder Præludia, und Fugen durch alle Tone und Semitonia, so wohl tertiam majorem oder Ut Re Mi anlangend, als auch tertiam minorem oder Re Mi Fa betreffend. Zum Nutzen und Gebrauch der Lehrbegierigen Musicalischen Jugend, als auch derer in diesem studio schon habil seyenden besonderem Zeitvertreib auffgesetzet und verfertiget ..." The well-tempered tuning of keyboard instruments was introduced in 1681 by the Harz music theorist Andreas Werckmeister - only then was playing in all keys possible. In 1710, Bach's Saxon compatriot Johann David Heinichen established the circle of fifths. In Bach's cycle, the system that would determine Western music for two centuries found its valid and imaginative compendium. Bach himself emphasized that his educational work could also provide "entertainment" of the highest caliber.

In the first part of the program, we invite the winners of the Werner Pirchner Prize 2024 for wind instruments to perform with a large orchestra in front of the Tyrolean audience.

Jazz im HdM: Jazz Piano Solo II

... fa-mi and mi-fa ... is the essence of music; at least the main line of this program based on selected parts of J.S. Bach's work, who coined this phrase and thus outlines the, as it seems, most important roadmap of his music. All figures, motives, particles as well as formal concepts unfold in the Hexachord cosmos described by him. Within the same, this new program for solo piano is now also exploratively on the way. Building on the method of the hexachordal approach used in Bach's opus, compositional structures are established, within which improvisation is also navigated. The basis for this are one- and two-voice improvisation exercises generated by development and adaptation, which represent the precursor to possible compositional concretization; as it could have also been a part of Bach's own composition process. The free play as well as more preconceived counterpoint builds on the same groundwork, oriented towards materials and mottos from Bach's two- and three-voice Inventions as well as the Well-Tempered Clavier. S. Bach's sonatas and partitas have been preserved as autographs; this document is one of the most beautiful handwritten testimonies of music history. It resurfaced only around 1890 and was offered for sale to Johannes Brahms, who doubted its authenticity. Today, the authenticity is proven, the original is located in the Berlin State Library and is widely spread as a facsimile. Bach noted the year 1720 on the title page. It can be assumed that the works were written during Bach's first, happy time as the "Hochfürstlich Anhalt-Cöthnischer wirklicher Capellmeister" at the court of the enlightened Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Köthen from 1717 for making music in a small circle. The pieces are considered the "Old Testament of violin music" today.

In two concerts, two significant, internationally successful violinists of our time dedicate themselves to essential parts of this compendium. The Greek-American Ariadne Daskalakis teaches in Cologne and performs worldwide with music from the Baroque to the modern era. Fabio Nieder, the unmistakable composer from Trieste residing in Romania, will contribute new pieces for both concerts. The first piece for this concert refers to the Chaconne from Bach's Partita in D minor. "It is an almost exclusively monodic composition. The sound of the violinist, alla corda, and almost articulated with the character of a hoarse speaking voice, forms a ductus where one imagines hearing words. Words, however, remain hidden in the instrumental sound," says Fabio Nieder.

HdM in Concert: Blasmusik meets Bach

In the year 2025, the Tyrolean Wind Music Association will celebrate its 100th anniversary with nearly 20,000 musicians in 302 member bands. This is a reason to present wind music in all its facets: wind music in traditional and modern forms, wind music in motion, and, as in this concert, as an encounter with the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. This music, already typically flexible in its instrumentation, can be experienced not only within the framework of traditional ensembles but also in newly interpreted versions for symphonic wind orchestras. However, the transformation of Bach's compositions requires a conscious decision regarding orchestration. The goal is to use the characteristic timbres of the individual wind instruments while at the same time preserving the intention and structure of the original works. J.S. Bach and the wind orchestra - a harmonious connection that shows that the music of this composer is timeless and can unfold its fascination in various ensembles and interpretations.
