Orgon's business is not going particularly well and at the same time prices are rising. This endangers the accustomed standard of living. For this reason, Orgon decides to rely on his friend Tartuff, who prescribes a strict savings plan. However, Tartuff does not adhere to what he preaches himself. Orgon's family is unable to make anything of this savings plan. His second wife Elmire is not thrilled with the new way of life, as she married her husband primarily for the money. Orgon's children, Mariane and Damis, have already firmly planned to someday become rich heirs and do not want to earn their own money at all. Only Madame Pernell, Orgon's mother, stands by her son, even though her lifestyle does not fit the ascetic fresh start at all. The renowned German playwright John von Düffel cleverly combines two famous comedies by Molière (The Miser and Tartuffe) in Der Geistige, creating a fast-paced, highly comedic remake teeming with eccentric characters.

The kings of hardcore from the Bay Area in California first stormed the scene in 2007 with their debut album "The Will To Survive". Influenced by bands like BLOOD FOR BLOOD, HATEBREED, and MADBALL, LIONHEART launched directly into a brutal storm of murderous hardcore. Shortly thereafter, in 2010, "Built On Struggle" followed, and in 2012 they followed up with "Undisputed" and years of consistent touring. After a short break following the release of "Undisputed", the band returned in 2014 stronger than ever with "Welcome To The Westcoast". The album debuted at #1 in both the iTunes Metal and Google Play Metal Charts. LIONHEART once again conquered the scene in January 2016 with "Love Don’t Live Here". The album title, which is a nod to the R&B/Motown classic of the same name, expresses the band's reluctance to be pigeonholed into the same "hardcore box," as well as the bitter and harsh lyrics for which the band is known. In November 2017, LIONHEART then released "Welcome To The Westcoast II". Shortsightedness is now compensated with foresight, and as long as the cake is more expensive than the candles on it, one is not old anyway.

Alex Kristan's alter egos naturally accompany him on this journey and are there to provide advice and assistance when it comes to the truly essential questions in the life of a man supposedly in his best years. It's a start-up into a new phase of life, where gout or truth is at stake.

The dinner and concert take place in the excellent acoustics of the historic Baroque hall of St. Peter. On the same day, Hermia is to marry Demetrius as her father commands. In her desperation, she flees with her beloved Lysander into the nearby forest at night, followed by Demetrius and Helena. There, the four soon find themselves in the magical world of fairies, right in the midst of the bitter marital conflict of the fairy king and queen, Titania and Oberon. SHE says: I pressed my hands against his chest. I said, "no, not."

HE says: At no point did she clearly and distinctly say "no" to any action.

Successful woman meets successful man. They start an affair. Both are married with children. After a few years, they decide to part ways in friendship, but shortly after, fate brings them back together. They engage in sexual intercourse again. She says it was not consensual. He says that's not true. Who is telling the truth? Will the trial reveal the answer?

After the two highly successful productions Terror and God, the Kammerspiele open the season with the premiere of another courtroom drama written by Ferdinand von Schirach. Once again, the author tackles an extremely sensitive topic. This time, he explores whether and to what extent current legislation is sufficient to legally assess sexual assaults. In public opinion, an acquittal or dismissal of such a case is often seen as evidence that the victim lied. One may recall recent cases such as the high-profile trial of Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard. The fundamental issue, however, lies in the fact that the court must not judge what actually happened, but only what can be proven.

Following the great success of CATS, the Vereinigte Bühnen Wien presents one of the most famous musicals of all time - Andrew Lloyd Webber's THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA - back to Vienna. Artistic Director Christian Struppeck is bringing Cameron Mackintosh's spectacular new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, which has never been seen in the German-speaking world, to the Raimund Theater from spring 2024.

The brand-new staging of the world-famous masterpiece has already been sold out in Great Britain, the USA, and Australia, where it was recently seen at the prestigious Sydney Opera House. The Austrian premiere will take place on March 15, 2024.

Prima Facie

Suzie Miller's moving, multi-award-winning monologue about the criminal defense attorney Tessa, who learns that the female experience of sexual violence does not fit into the male-dominated judicial system – one of the greatest theater successes of recent years is coming to Vienna!

„I only know that somewhere. Sometime. Somehow. Something has to change.“

Tessa is a criminal defense lawyer, and her specialty is primarily men who are on trial for sexual assault. She does not have to prove whether the victim consented, but rather that her client did not know that there was no consent. And Tessa is very successful in her job. Her advice is sought after by colleagues. Julian from her firm also asks for her help. The two grow closer and have sex that both enjoy. But at the next date, something happens: Julian becomes sexually aggressive. And Tessa is faced with the question of how her life should continue now. Was it just bad sex in a heavily intoxicated state – or was it rape?

„So much is at stake: my private life, friends, family. My career. Everything, just everything. That scares me.“

Tessa goes to the police. And she becomes a witness for the prosecution. From now on, she experiences the proceedings in the courtroom from the other side, which changes her perspective on things.

For years, since her law studies, the author Suzie Miller had the idea for PRIMA FACIE*. But it only came to fruition against the backdrop of the global #MeToo movement that started in 2017. The play bridges art and social change. Because still, filing a report of a sexual crime entails attending all court dates: appearing for the prosecution, cross-examination, and media coverage – which requires extraordinary courage. And the process of coming to terms with it is long and requires great trust in the justice of the legal system. But does this system even deserve that trust? Or does it continue to make victims of sexualized assaults prefer to stay silent? How can, how must society evolve to reform this area?

Suzie Miller's stirring monologue premiered in Sydney, Australia, in 2019. In the spring of 2022, Jodie Comer (KILLING EVE) played the role of Tessa at the National Theatre in London. More than 300,000 audience members saw the play live in cinemas through the broadcast of the National Theatre. Awarded the Australia Writers’ Guild Award 2020, the David Williamson Award 2020, and the Olivier Award 2023.

Directed by Laura N. Junghanns, who most recently staged the world premieres DER TERMIN based on the novel of the same name by Katharina Volckmer and DIE COUSINEN by Nava Ebrahimi at the Volkstheater.

Hans, who is soon to retire as a school principal, behaves more like a guest in his wife Rita's life. Their son has long moved out, and the long-standing marriage of the two follows a well-rehearsed routine, with Rita setting the pace. And as far as she is concerned, there is no reason to change anything about it. In general: she doesn’t like changes. The new tiles in the bathroom are just the beginning of something that greatly worries Rita. Suddenly, old wounds become visible again. Suddenly, both of them realize how little they know about their son's life. Suddenly, there is this emptiness in their lives. Suddenly, it is no longer clear whether they are two individuals or a couple. But then life happens…

It’s about repression, forgiveness, and the fading of a great love. It’s about guilt and death and atonement.
What may sound like a melancholic melodrama comes with poetic charm, a lot of emotion, and plenty of humor. The well-crafted dialogues contribute their part in giving the drama the necessary nonchalance.

With Anke Engelke and Ulrich Tukur, the couple on the verge of a nervous breakdown is perfectly cast and brings enormous potential for empathy into play.

For the world premiere of MARIA THERESIA – DAS MUSICAL, the VBW has assembled a first-class creative team: The legendary composer and music producer Dieter Falk (MOSES - DIE ZEHN GEBOTE, BETHLEHEM, LUTHER, among others, multiple ECHO award winner, 50 platinum and gold records) writes the music and is also responsible for orchestration and arrangements together with his son, the renowned music producer and composer Paul Falk (writes for Helene Fischer, DJ Ötzi, Michelle, Howard Carpendale, etc.). The lyrics are penned by lyricist Jonathan Zelter (writes for Michelle, Tim Peters, Roland Kaiser, Peggy March - multiple top-ten placements in album charts, gold and platinum awards). The book is by Austrian author Thomas Kahry (SPATZ UND ENGEL (Burgtheater + internationally), HOUDINI, AUGUSTIN, HOLLYWOOD IN VIENNA, RAIMUND-THEATER-GALA, etc.). Alex Kristan has turned 50, or as the optimist within him says: "The first third of life is over." And because the thirst for action is still greater than the nocturnal urge to urinate, he takes this "round" as an opportunity to treat himself to a new solo program. Because when one suddenly finds themselves in the 50+ target group as a so-called Best Ager, only humor can help against the lead in the legs and the silver in the hair.

Supposedly, 50 is the new 30. Or is that only true for the local area? Even if 10 PM becomes the new midnight, the new skin care still doesn't have to be Voltaren instead of Nivea. It still pays off to buy long-life milk. Making diet plans, dyeing hair, whitening teeth, all of that is for pop-up seniors who see crowdfunding as a detox cure. His motto, on the other hand, is: "being sensible is like being dead, but before" and brings back the cheeky kid.

Exactly at that pivotal point in life, where the balance lies between looking well-groomed and being well taken care of, one asks oneself if everything really was better in the past and if so, why not? Shortsightedness is now compensated with foresight, and as long as the cake is more expensive than the candles on it, one is not old anyway.

Alex Kristan's alter egos naturally accompany him on this journey and are there to provide advice and assistance when it comes to the truly essential questions in the life of a man supposedly in his best years. It's a start-up into a new phase of life, where gout or truth is at stake.

And the truth is, he is 42 net, so exclusive of VAT. Aging is a very beautiful thing. Especially considering the alternative.

The Nobel Prize winner and writer Elfriede Jelinek is said to have evaded taxes? The starting point of "Angabe der Person" is a true incident surrounding a - now discontinued - investigation by German tax authorities against Elfriede Jelinek. It revolves around the contentious issue of double taxation, as she alternates between living in Vienna and with her husband in Munich. In this autobiographically inspired piece, Jelinek describes how the "servants of the state" search her apartment to prove whether she is liable for taxes in Germany as a writer. The officials comb through the apartment, intruding into her intimacy. Personal documents are viewed, private emails are read, hard drives are scrutinized, and billing receipts are critically examined. Jelinek uses this involuntary inventory of her personal "life trajectory" as an opportunity to denounce political injustices on multiple levels. In her most personal text to date, Elfriede Jelinek calls her paternal Jewish ancestors to the stand, who were persecuted by the inhumane administrative system of the Nazi regime. Simultaneously, she weaves a narrative connecting to the unleashed financial capitalism of the present through associations and wordplay. Using the means of her formidable linguistic artistry, Elfriede Jelinek embarks on a literary investigation against legal tax havens, global money flows, and the greed of big capital herself.

Director Sara Ostertag is one of Austria's most successful theater artists, known for her visually powerful, genre-fluid aesthetic. She has collaborated with the Lower Austrian State Theater on several productions, including the acclaimed premieres of "The Greater Hope" and "Darkflower." For the first time, Sara Ostertag is bringing a theater text by Elfriede Jelinek to the stage with the ensemble of the State Theater and specially composed music.

Dancefloor songs, an emotional story, and a road movie that takes us from the city to the countryside: These are the basic ingredients for this musical. Based on the film of the same name from 1994, the stage piece is a feel-good package that seamlessly connected to the unexpected success of the film. It quickly conquered international cinemas starting from Australia, just as the musical later did the international stages.

The jukebox musical tells the story of two drag queens Mitzi (Tick) and Felicia (Adam) as well as the transgender woman Bernadette, who travel through the Australian Outback on the bus "Priscilla" to put on a show in Alice Springs. The journey is initiated by Tick, who wants to meet his son from a previous heterosexual relationship. For all three, the trip also becomes a journey to themselves and a struggle for social and personal acceptance.

Identity, tolerance, and self-confidence are addressed with wit and heart, and the well-known pop songs with earworm character (e.g., “I Will Survive,” “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” and “It’s Raining Men”) create an uplifting atmosphere. A colorful musical as a plea for respect for each individual's uniqueness.

Written by Stephan Elliott and Allan Scott, the musical “Priscilla – Queen of the Desert” premiered in Sydney in 2006. The selection of music was central to the stage adaptation: 25 songs were used, mostly from the pop music of the 70s and 80s. Elliott had also directed the film of the same name in 1994. After its great success in Australia, the musical moved to London in 2009 and to Broadway in 2011.

With “Priscilla – Queen of the Desert,” Ramesh Nair makes his directorial debut at the Salzburg Landestheater. Recently seen as the lead actor in “Singin’ in the Rain” on stage, he now collaborates with Michael Lindner (set design) and Adam Nee (costumes) to create the next cult-status musical. The band, led by Wolfgang Götz and Manuel Lauerer, enhances the colorful evening with well-known hits.

The introduction to the work takes place 45 and 30 minutes before the performance begins.

With her band project Brazey, she combines singer/songwriter elements with a jazzy touch and adds a hint of alternative pop to the whole mix. Delicate, melancholic yet playful guitar melodies take the listener on a journey through a warm and inviting soundscape.

Olicía is the band project of the two singers and multi-instrumentalists Fama M’Boup and Anna-Lucia Rupp, navigating the tension between human voice, acoustic instruments, free improvisation, and the use of electronic possibilities. At some point, they dubbed it ‘electronic handmade loopjazz’ – everything you hear on stage is created in the moment, nothing is pre-produced.

FIVE HEARTS greets us with a multitude of voices – let us imagine each of the five hearts as belonging to a voice. Each one a search engine, sent off on inquiries with Brazey’s questions, instead finds a thousand memes (about itself). Thus, they are never quite locatable, sending from the road, in the midst of their missions. We become witnesses to their endeavors: golden threads through a plethora of emotions and information, which leaves nothing intact in their tangle. We hold on to them, they withstand it. Howling, and sometimes finding unity, they harmonize. Through their correspondence, the musical spaces open up.

SONGS FOR SLEEP – Brazey’s last EP – was a somnambulistic odyssey through the microcosm of a very small room, where restlessness laid like a soft blanket over everything. FIVE HEARTS once again opens up to the airy concert halls and jazz stages from Brazey’s musical past. Their instruments are also woven into the dense sound carpet that still feels light, and now and then is compressed by electronic interventions, briefly throwing itself into pop at its highest points and then completely eluding definition again. One thing all songs have in common: an intoxicating intimacy that characterizes Brazey’s unique style with its startling clarity.

Olicía
Olicía is the band of the two singers and multi-instrumentalists Fama M’Boup and Anna-Lucia Rupp. Driven by female voices, they share lead vocals and other musical elements, layering, beatboxing, harmonizing, and letting sounds grow that partially occur in the now, partially only in the future. The instrumentation ranges from synths and looped vocal snippets to guitar and clarinet.

Genre boundaries have always been fluid for Olicía – fragile folk moments, pulsating pop, avant-garde soul, spoken word, jazz ... Olicía’s music seems to maintain a subtly futuristic quality through its own unique form of inception over two synchronized loop stations. The constraints (and lengths) of loop-based music seem to practically be rendered ineffective by the two, creating direct songs with efficiency and elegance that do not rely on backing tracks and leave room for improvisation and chance.

In 2021, Olicía released their debut album LIQUID LINES - a double album that presented each song in two very different versions. Since then, solo albums (in June) and band projects (NOUK, cocotá) have been released under their own label o-cetera.

They were part of the live lineup of Sophie Hunger, released music with Dota Kehr and Kat Frankie, and contributed a song to the soundtrack of Robert Gwisdek’s directorial debut (Käptn Peng). Above all, however, the two spent more than two years working on the songs and works that are now collected in OUT OF THE BLUE. While LIQUID LINES explored the boundaries of the individual song, OUT OF THE BLUE is now an attempt to completely re-examine their art form, connecting their music through dialogue and exchange with other art genres.

For each song on this album, there exists an artwork of the same title, functioning as a counterpart and created in a close exchange process. A result of ongoing pings and pongs until both sides felt they had arrived at a result. “Out of the Blue” is therefore not what is often referred to as a ‘coherent album.’

Rather, it is the opposite. Each song opens its own world and simultaneously gazes into the parallel universe of another artist from fields such as film, design, painting, literature, and crafts. Each pair of works has its own space on the band's own label website, o-cetera.com.

Directing is by well-known musical specialist Alex Balga (JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, MESSIAH ROCKS, RAIMUND-THEATER-GALA, MIAMI NIGHTS, WE WILL ROCK YOU, DIRTY DANCING, ROCK OF AGES, etc.). The choreography is created by one of the most innovative artists in the field: Jonathan Huor (MAMMA MIA! (Mörbisch), KUDAMM ‘56, ROMEO & JULIA, RAIMUND-THEATER-GALA, THE VOICE, etc.). The set design is by the award-winning West End designer Morgan Large (DISNEY’S NEWSIES (London), SUNSET BOULEVARD (Sydney), SISTER ACT (UK Tour), WICKED (Sao Paulo), etc.), who also develops the video design. The costumes are created by renowned artist Aleksandra Kica (Wiener Volksoper, Theater in der Josefstadt, Salzburger Landestheater, Seefestspiele Mörbisch, etc.). The lighting design is by London star designer Ben Cracknell (PRISCILLA, CHESS, THE ADDAMS FAMILY, JOSEPH, etc.), and the sound is by German sound designer Carsten Kümmel (LUTHER, BETHLEHEM, No Angels, World of Hans Zimmer, Eurovision Song Contest, etc.).

The orchestra of the Vereinigten Bühnen Wien in a large lineup will perform under the musical direction of Carsten Paap.

Starting in the fall of 2025, Maria Theresia's extraordinary life will be experienced for the first time as a spectacular musical at the Ronacher. The cast will be announced before the summer.
