Mushroom Seminar at Häuserl Im Wald

Collecting and identifying mushrooms correctly - we experience an exciting mushroom day with expert supervision.

Duration: 10:00 am - 2:30 pm

In the morning, after an introduction under the motto "Autumn mushrooms of the Graz mixed forests," participants will collect mushrooms in the neighboring Leechwald. During the lunch break, a mushroom exhibition with name tags will be created using the mushrooms found. There is the possibility to enjoy mushrooms culinarily at lunch at the country inn "Häuserl im Wald."

In the afternoon, the two speakers Dr. Uwe Kozina and Gernot Friebes from the Working Group Indigenous Mushrooms at the Universalmuseum Joanneum will present the exhibited mushrooms and discuss their identification characteristics, toxicity, edibility, etc. Additionally, we will learn interesting facts about the role of mushrooms in the ecosystem and have the opportunity to photograph the identified mushrooms.

Gentle and strong the voice, handmade the music, melodies sounding like a new beginning - at AnJosef, the ears of the audience glow as brightly as the red hair of singer and songwriter Anna. The project surrounding the styrian woman prefers one thing the most: playing live on stage. The poetic songs ranging from feel-good-pop to melancholic ballads - folk songs about overflowing emotions ("Lifeboat", "Cinderella"), captivate with dreamy metaphors ("Bestseller", "Elephant") and accompany or remind of the coming of age ("5&1). Here a reggae influence, there a jazzy solo and a funky riff, their arrangements surprise with cool sounds of the 80s as well as light-footed indie ideas. AnJosef stick with the German language, real instruments, and the versatility of Anna's voice. Born in Graz in 1996 as Anna Heimrath, she entered the finals of "The Voice of Germany" in 2017, went on tour, gained fans. She sings with Ed Sheeran, James Blunt, Die Fantastischen 4, and Beth Ditto. By 2024, AnJosef has opened her creative floodgates wide. The new album is coming! And it has everything: Anna's fragile voice, bold lyrics, and pleasing grooves. With the first single, the 27-year-old has dedicated a hymn to the fragility of the times - or is it of her generation - "Glass House". The song says, "Those who throw stones, also like to play with hearts." "Glass House" is also the namesake of the album which will be released in October.

Along the four basic emotions – JOY, ANGER, SORROW, and LOVE – the musicians will take the audience on an emotional journey of transformation. The concluding concert is dedicated to the emotion "LOVE." At the beginning, arrangements of Clara Schumann's songs composed after her marriage will be performed. This is followed by the slow movement for string quartet by Anton Webern, which he wrote as a young man in love. At the end, Alexander Borodin's second string quartet will be presented, written as a memory of the time when he and his wife met and fell in love 20 years earlier.

Together with specially trained truffle dogs, we set out to search for hidden treasures in the forest floor.

During a leisurely forest walk, we embark on an exciting and informative truffle hunt in special plant and animal communities. Afterwards, the truffles found will be prepared in a culinary way.

In the Graz city forests, various types of underground growing truffle mushrooms are found using the fine noses of the dogs. Not only coveted gourmet truffles but also inedible truffles are expressions of the biodiversity in ecologically maintained forest stands.

If participating with dogs, the success of the truffle hunt cannot be guaranteed due to significant distraction, therefore dogs are not allowed to accompany the hike.

Prince sterz? Brenn sterz? Bean sterz? With coffee, mushroom soup, or maybe with buttermilk? As simple as the basic recipe may seem, there are so many different variations of it! In whatever form, you will definitely be satisfied. While sterz was long considered food for the poor, today it is very popular in traditional-modern cuisine. During our tour of the museum, we will focus on the origins of this dish, find out how sterz actually came to Styria, and what Archduke Johann had to do with it! Beginning with an extended stay in the historic smoke room, where not only cooking and eating took place, but also living, we start our journey of discovery. This is a great opportunity to talk about food and drink and learn about the historical rural daily life in Styria. At the end of the tour, Gut Schloßberg awaits you with an interesting show cooking of three sterz variations.

The event starts with a 50 to 60-minute guided tour, followed by a sterz show cooking at Gut Schloßberg with a shared meal and a cozy end.

"Conquer" the Grazer fortress mountain with the Schlossbergbahn funicular. Let yourself be enchanted by attractive views and interesting historical insights! You will climb up creaking wooden stairs, marvel at the huge "Liesl," and ascend the clock tower. The tour starts at Schlossbergplatz and ends with a lift ride up the mountain.
