Johannes Maria Staud celebrates his 50th birthday - and KLANGSPUREN celebrates him with a new work for string orchestra. Additionally, the violin concerto by Chaya Czernowin will be performed as another novelty.

This year, Johannes Maria Staud, who has been connected with the festival from the beginning, celebrates his 50th birthday - and KLANGSPUREN celebrates him with a new work for string orchestra, which will be premiered by the Munich Chamber Orchestra. "On one side the sail: 'la voile,' on the other the veil: 'le voile' " - one word, two meanings, no trace of clarity, but associations: wind, white, the vastness of the sea, the human inability to understand. Iannis Xenakis does not aim to provide listening instructions for his works, on the contrary: "The listener must be seized and, whether he likes it or not, be drawn into the flight paths of the sounds," he says. "The sensory shock must be as penetrating as the clap of thunder or the view into an abyss." Like his composition, Chaya Czernowin's violin concerto Moths of Hunger and Awe is a commissioned work of the Munich Chamber Orchestra - a piece in which the Israeli composer pushes the boundaries of musical means of expression: This is her response to a present marked by upheavals and breakthroughs. Juste Janulyte's "Elongation of Nights" also originates from a very present, very human experience: the feeling when in autumn the night gradually becomes longer than the day. Two musical levels shift in this composition in the same balance with and against each other, echoing, wave-like - harmonically based on fifths, the intervals of the empty strings of the string instruments: Everything is in flow, everything happens very naturally, oppressively and yet unstoppably.

Songs for double bass solo (2024), world premiere

Born in Tyrol in 1981, Matthias Pichler began trumpet lessons at the age of six and studied double bass from a young age at the Tyrolean State Conservatory and the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz. During his stays in New York, he collaborated with bassists such as John Patitucci, Marc Johnson, and Larry Grenadier and took lessons from them. In 2014 and 2015, he was a finalist for the New German Jazz Prize along with his twin brother Andreas and has long been considered one of the most sought-after bassists in Europe. In addition to his work as a soloist and musician in various ensembles and combos, he teaches at the JIB/Jazz Institute Berlin. His “Crown Heights: Songs for double bass solo” convey much about his connection to this instrument, the shared history, and the different musical paths and genres in which the double bass feels at home. In the attic of the listed Parish Church of the Assumption, the interpretation of the double bass songs gains a special intimacy – not to mention the impressive architecture of the roof structure and the centuries-old history inscribed within it.

In Schwaz, Gunter Schneider is no stranger - if not as a composer or performer, then sometimes as a well-read, wise voice introducing the most important concerts of the festival. He turned 70 in April and, in this concert, he looks back on the central stages of his work together with the audience: while teaching guitar, improvisation, and contemporary music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, he performed as a soloist and in the duo Romen&Schneider with his wife Barbara Romen, who plays various dulcimers, on international stages and with various orchestras. In parallel, they developed projects such as the experimental "quadrat:sch", "Stimmen der Steine erspüren", or "klopfzeichen" in collaboration with visual artists or "zimt" and "DUCHAMP DEFAULT" with Angéllica Castelló and Burkhard Stangl. Improvisation has always been an important component of his musical practice, playing a significant role in his compositional work as well. Gunter Schneider composed pieces for guitar, (chamber) orchestra, and choir - among others, his work intension/extension was premiered in Schwaz in 2012.

Choreographic Composition (2021)

The collaboration between Brigitte Wilfing and Jorge Sánchez-Chiong is a new form of music theater: a fascinating experiment at the intersections of choreography, composition, and new media.

Brigitte Wilfing would have much preferred to write about the work as "dance": "If it had been a piece for a dance festival, I would have because I know that even a slight shift or deconstruction of a musical gesture can be perceived as dance." Growing Sideways is originally, however, a piece for Wien Modern – a "choreographic composition in recurring behavioral patterns." In their work, the choreographer and composer Jorge Sánchez-Chiong merge sound with the movement it generates. There is always a choreographic device at the beginning – sometimes the musicians are lying on the floor as in Land of the Flats, sometimes they stand on one leg or play with their head turned to the side as in "growing sideways": "Looking over the shoulder is our new normal," says Brigitte Wilfing in an interview. "What does this look do to me, to my movement and orientation?" However, this does not create a homogeneous image, no "corps de ballets," on the contrary: the different bodies show with their individual experiences and characteristics what looking sideways can open up but also restrict: "Every performer with their background should really be emphasized," says Wilfing, "this is very important to me choreographically." The Theater Liberi stages the well-known fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen as a modern musical adaptation. The professional musical ensemble tells the story of the loneliness of an outsider and her desire for admiration and acceptance, but also of courage and unconditional friendship. This contrast is also reflected in the stage design, which blurs the boundaries between fantasy and reality. Adventure in snow and ice
Gerda and Kay are best friends and inseparable since childhood. The two lead a completely normal life until one day a winter storm approaches their city. That evening, Gerda's mother tells them for the first time the story of a magical queen, the ruler of snow and ice. When Kay mysteriously disappears shortly after, Gerda sets out to find him. She lands in a mysterious world where anything seems possible. Suddenly, Gerda is in the midst of an adventure where she meets funny characters, makes an eccentric acquaintance, and falls into the hands of a quirky gang. Luckily, she is not alone and can count on unexpected help. But time is running out and Gerda must muster all her courage to save Kay from the icy world of the Snow Queen...

Christmas Eve, the evening when every Italian table is enchanted with colors, aromas, intricate shapes, and creative flavor combinations. On Christmas Eve, there is no meat in Italian families! Therefore, the only requirement is that you must like fish - we will also be serving matching wines with the dishes.

Fans of Die Paldauer can once again look forward to a deeply moving, thoughtful, and sophisticated concert. The show was prepared with a lot of love and passion by Die Paldauer. In a Christmas atmosphere, the sensitive and deeply moving songs will touch every heart. The focus is on the two singers who complement each other perfectly: the spirited and personable frontman Didi Ganshofer and lead singer Renato Wohllaib, who has already sung his way into the hearts of his fans with his gentle and flattering voice. The two brass players, Harald Muster and Erwin Pfundner, contribute significantly to the typical Paldauer sound with their instruments. Tony Hofer on electric bass and 15 other instruments, thanks to his classical and jazz training, provides great solo performances, and bandleader Franz Griesbacher skillfully guides the emotional program with Austrian charm and a touch of humor.
