It is perhaps the most famous love story in the world, attracting countless tourists each year to the balcony of Casa di Giulietta in Verona, Italy. Shakespeare died in 1616, but his contribution to world literature remains alive and relevant to this day.

In the middle of a stormy thunderous night, the girl Ronja is born. Sheltered and deeply loved by her father, the robber chieftain Mattis, Ronja grows up as the only child in a romantic castle in Mattiswald. One day, she meets Birk, the son of the robber Borka, and they become friends. But Ronja's father must not find out about their friendship, as he has been feuding with Birk's father for many, many years. So Ronja and Birk flee into the forest to hide from their fathers. There, they experience exciting adventures and encounter various mysterious creatures, such as the wild druids, the grey dwarfs, and the whimsical Rumpelwights. The longer the two friends live in the forest, the more they doubt the life of a robber, and they decide to reconcile the warring robber gangs.

Following his successful production of "Emil and the Detectives," Felix Metzner dedicates this season to Astrid Lindgren's world-famous children's book classic. How can a bourgeois democracy develop from a dictatorship without creating injustice again? Disappointed by the failure of the French Revolution, Friedrich Schiller wrote the Queen drama "Maria Stuart" in 1799 as a parable about political and moral responsibility: In England in the year 1568, insurmountable religious conflicts between Catholics and Protestants reign, unclear political power relations divide the people and exacerbate the tense social situation. Two powerful rivals face each other in Schiller's tense drama: Mary Stuart, the Catholic Queen of Scotland, and her Protestant cousin Elizabeth, Queen of England. Mary, pursued as the alleged murderer of her husband, flees to England and asks for asylum. But Elizabeth fears for her crown, as Mary herself has claims to it, and has Mary imprisoned. As a conspiracy against Elizabeth's Protestant government is underway, Mary is suspected of supporting it from prison. Within this web of power and personal competition between the two queens, the male allies, admirers, and officials seize their chances for career advancement.

Against the backdrop of the current Iranian protests for women's freedom, Iranian author Mahin Sadri condenses Schiller's classic into an "intimate story about two queens, two lovers, two chambermaids, and a guard" and creates a contemporary scenario in which fighters like Mary and Elizabeth are seen as a threat to the powerful. "Maria Stuart," a multilingual production by Iranian star director Amir Reza Koohestani, is his first production in Austria.

The story is set in Merano and Bangkok and involves two chess players, one Russian and the other American. The two characters and their life stories were probably inspired by Viktor Korchnoi and Bobby Fischer. A love triangle unfolds during a world championship tournament, with the manager and lover of one of the players falling in love with his rival. This musical is about politics, conspiracy, love and jealousy, all played out against the backdrop of a world chess championship.

How can a bourgeois democracy develop from a dictatorship without creating injustice again? Disappointed by the failure of the French Revolution, Friedrich Schiller wrote the Queen drama "Maria Stuart" in 1799 as a parable about political and moral responsibility: In England in the year 1568, insurmountable religious conflicts between Catholics and Protestants reign, unclear political power relations divide the people and exacerbate the tense social situation. Two powerful rivals face each other in Schiller's tense drama: Mary Stuart, the Catholic Queen of Scotland, and her Protestant cousin Elizabeth, Queen of England. Mary, pursued as the alleged murderer of her husband, flees to England and asks for asylum. But Elizabeth fears for her crown, as Mary herself has claims to it, and has Mary imprisoned. As a conspiracy against Elizabeth's Protestant government is underway, Mary is suspected of supporting it from prison. Within this web of power and personal competition between the two queens, the male allies, admirers, and officials seize their chances for career advancement.

Against the backdrop of the current Iranian protests for women's freedom, Iranian author Mahin Sadri condenses Schiller's classic into an "intimate story about two queens, two lovers, two chambermaids, and a guard" and creates a contemporary scenario in which fighters like Mary and Elizabeth are seen as a threat to the powerful. "Maria Stuart," a multilingual production by Iranian star director Amir Reza Koohestani, is his first production in Austria.

For the fourth time, the fate of our New Year's Concert is in the hands of the renowned conductor of the Graz Opera, Marius Burkert, who this time will musically open the gate to the new year with lively melodies from opera and operetta, as well as the obligatory waltzes and polkas, together with the audience favorite from Baden, the lyrical soprano Sieglinde Feldhofer.
