Since the nine Eberhofer crime film adaptations, Eisi Gulp has become well-known to a wide audience as the cannabis-smoking film dad of police officer Franz Eberhofer. Werner Eisenrieder, as he is known in real life in Munich, is not only an actor, comedian, and cabaret artist, but he also studied dance in New York as well as acrobatics and stunts in Paris - a true all-round artist.

Since 2015, he has been playing in the series "Dahoam is Dahoam" and has also appeared in countless feature films and series. As early as the 1980s, he became known through films like "Zuckerbaby", "Eisi Gulp Show", and the BR program "Live aus dem Alabama".

At the beginning of the artistic direction of Patricia Nickel-Dönicke, twelve directors of this and the following season will bring to the stage together with the entire ensemble and the newly founded city ensemble "Der aufhaltsame Aufstieg des Arturo Ui". Seventy years after his death, Brecht still influences contemporary forms of theater. Famous worldwide for his alienation effects, as well as for songs, narrative comments, dance, puppetry, and film, the complexity of Brecht's work will be re-examined at the beginning of the season.

And which play is better suited for these times than "Der aufhaltsame Aufstieg des Arturo Ui"? During the rampant economic crisis in Chicago, the small-time crook Arturo Ui enters the milieu of the vegetable dealers. He guarantees the "Cauliflower Trust" through a dubious business model the preservation of their income, thus gaining access to the city council and the broader circles of the Chicago political elite. Once united in shady dealings, the vegetable dealers must watch as Ui gradually establishes the law of the stronger on the streets of Chicago as well as in the political day-to-day business. Driven by his greed for power as well as by his insatiable gangster colleagues, Chicago soon becomes too small for Ui, and he discovers in the profitability of war the ideal export business.

Brecht's historical farce meticulously reconstructs the mechanisms and patterns through which fascist ideologies consume a state and its civil society. At the end of the play, in a historical parallel to the annexation of Austria in 1938, stands the ultimate break with international law. The clearer and more familiar the individual stages on Ui's path appear, the more pressing is the question: Why does the middle of a society stand still and allow these developments to happen? Does it secretly believe it can profit from the rise of a gangster?

All over the world, power-hungry narcissists are becoming politicians like in Brecht's "Arturo Ui", art and press are experiencing attacks on their freedom believed to be overcome, and international manners from the gangster era of the last century are becoming established. Also in Europe, the questions become more urgent about how the rise of anti-democratic forces can still be halted. Therefore, the collective engagement with Brecht's template is also a positioning for togetherness, without which democratic coexistence cannot be resilient.

Since the nine Eberhofer crime film adaptations, Eisi Gulp has become well-known to a wide audience as the cannabis-smoking film dad of police officer Franz Eberhofer. Werner Eisenrieder, as he is known in real life in Munich, is not only an actor, comedian, and cabaret artist, but he also studied dance in New York as well as acrobatics and stunts in Paris - a true all-round artist.

Since 2015, he has been playing in the series "Dahoam is Dahoam" and has also appeared in countless feature films and series. As early as the 1980s, he became known through films like "Zuckerbaby", "Eisi Gulp Show", and the BR program "Live aus dem Alabama".

After many years in which he was primarily active as a film and television actor, which brought him great recognition and popularity in the German-speaking world, he is now returning with a brand-new program as a cabaret artist! In GENIE, theater.nuu explores the tension between technical apparatus and its own unique magic. Four theater texts by Elfriede Jelinek from almost four decades, written between 1988 and 2025. DIE ANKUNFT is a theater marathon at the right time – here, in the land of mountains, land by the river. And now, as the last firewalls in Europe begin to crumble.

1945, the last days of the war: A lavish celebration is held at Schloss Rechnitz in Burgenland. As the highlight, guests shoot approximately 200 Jewish forced laborers. In the 2000s, a right-wing extremist terror cell kills across Germany without interruption. In both cases, the legal proceedings drag on, witnesses remain silent, evidence disappears. And today? The political center falls silent, the right-wing turn is in full swing, ethnic and radical thinking becomes respectable again – and frightening continuities become ever more recognizable.

Elfriede Jelinek distills both contemporary history and immediate present into great literature. RECHNITZ (THE STRANGLER ANGEL) is her central work on Nazi crimes and their legacy, in DAS SCHWEIGENDE MÄDCHEN she addresses the murders of the NSU and the subsequent trials. And in DAS LEBEWOHL – NEIN:

DIE ANKUNFT she escalates the self-assuredly clumsy rhetoric of right-wing rabble-rousers into a breathless hymn of power takeover fantasies and fascist nature poetry. Jan Philipp Gloger, who has been dealing with the works of the Nobel laureate Elfriede Jelinek in productions, including world and premiere performances, for many years, combines four of her plays into a grand edifice of repression and return. An evening about the lines of tradition of nationalist thought and right-wing violence through the centuries – and an evening that traces madness as well as laments forgetfulness and silence. As a prologue serves Jelinek's early work WOLKEN.HEIM. Here, Hölderlin, Hegel, and other classics already speak in a chorus of national pathos – thus preparing the ground for the future.

Leading Classical Concert Vienna

Welcome to the House of Strauss – in the historic Strauss Hall from 1837, where all four members of the Strauss dynasty once performed.

The House of Strauss has been recommended twice by The New York Times in the series "36 Hours in Vienna" and described by a major Austrian daily newspaper as "a daily little New Year's concert."

Your evening begins with a champagne reception and a visit to the House of Strauss Museum. There, before the concert, you will immerse yourself in the world of the Strauss dynasty – in their history, their music, and the time when Vienna became the world capital of the waltz.

Talyani Waqar Malik exists in five different versions. His five selves are spread across the world: In Beirut, he is the owner of a jeans store; in Rome, he is a Ferrari-driving neurosurgeon; in Quebec, a successful artist; in Paris, an unambitious taxi driver; and in Texas, a death-row convict. Each place of life, each environment, every experience shapes a new identity, a new character, a new personality.
The trigger of the story is the explosion of 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate in August 2020, which destroyed the port of Beirut and damaged large parts of the city. The play follows the five Talyanis and their families during the following week and shows how the disaster resonates in their lives.

Almost twenty years after his unforgettable production of BURNING, Stefan Bachmann dedicates himself to Wajdi Mouawad's new play and the question of the possibilities and constraints of our being.

LEOPOLDSTADT is more than a place for Tom Stoppard. It is an echo, a shadow, a whisper through generations. In his last play, the playwright, who passed away in 2025, tells the Jewish history of Vienna from glory to annihilation – not as a museal flashback, but as a very personal, movingly present family story.

We follow the Merz family: affluent, secularized, integrated, like so many who believed in progress around the turn of the century. It is a world in the rhythm of the waltz and assimilation, at the center of a metropolis that considers itself enlightened. A day like many in the practice of veterinarian Maria: turtle, hedgehog, guinea pig are waiting for her attention. Alongside the practice dog Zuki (from the future), of course. But inexplicable ailments torment the animals, the nervousness rises, un- or healing things are approaching, Zuki can only just maintain order with great difficulty. Is the climate crisis heating up tempers? Is it the alienation between species? Or that strange smell?

When bat Rocky suddenly crashes into the practice during a blackout and announces her bestial uprising fantasies, both mistress and dog know: only operetta can help here. As a means of choice in times of crisis and change, it sweetens the transition – especially for all those who already realize that something must change.

A man is under pressure: Franz Woyzeck serves as a simple soldier and also helps his captain privately. Additionally, he has been working for several weeks as a medical test subject and only eats peas, peas, peas. The doctor expects groundbreaking nutritional insights from this. And indeed, Woyzeck's malnutrition takes its toll; he hears voices, becomes increasingly mentally confused, for which the pleased doctor even pays a small fee. Nevertheless, Woyzeck's money is barely enough to support his life with his girlfriend Marie and their child. Ridiculed by the captain, humiliated by the doctor, and soon betrayed by Marie, Woyzeck moves through the world "like an open razor."

The genius poet and politically persecuted activist Georg Büchner created a milestone of social drama shortly before his early death in 1837 with WOYZECK. Based on the court documents of a casual worker and murderer, the play tells the story of the low-income Woyzeck and the process of his mental deterioration. Director Mechthild Harnischmacher engages once again with societal structures that promote violence against women after her production of LIKE LOVERS DO in the darkroom. Driven by the beats of exceptional drummer Katharina Ernst, Mechthild Harnischmacher presents the play as a monologue that permeates the consequential connection between social decline and male loneliness.

The Karlskirche in Vienna - “St. Karl Borromäus” - is considered the most significant sacramental building north of the Alps. It was built at the behest of Emperor Charles VI starting in 1716 after the last major plague pandemic and was completed in 1737. Antonio Vivaldi was buried directly at the Karlskirche in 1741. Until 1918, it was the imperial patronage church. Today, you can experience authentic concerts in the Karlskirche with the orchestra 1756 playing on original instruments and its soloists. Our traditional performances of Vivaldi's "4 Seasons" are now widely known for their high artistic competence and vibrant interpretation.

Ken Ludwig, who has already successfully adapted Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express for the stage, now turns to another legendary figure of English crime literature: “In my play, it’s primarily about the deep friendship between Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. It forms the core of the myth that Conan Doyle created. The Case of Moriarty is my attempt to give us all a fresh opportunity to experience the comedic fun and melodramatic pyrotechnics of the Holmes universe.”

After his highly successful production of The Great Dictator, Dominic Oley – again with a small, extremely versatile cast – will bring this gripping Sherlock Holmes adventure to the stage of the Kammerspiele.

Romeo und Julia

“Romeo und Julia” is perhaps the most famous love story in the world. For good reason, the tragedy by William Shakespeare is considered the benchmark for countless love stories. Two young people from traditionally feuding families meet – no one knows what ignited the hatred between the two parties anymore. They escape into love and discover it at first sight for each other. But their unconditional devotion has been forbidden from the very beginning.

In his adaptation, Swiss author Lucien Haug remains in Shakespearean meter and creates a contemporary version of a young, naive, and exuberant love in a world distorted by enmity and hatred. The two lovers Romeo and Julia set out to prove a limitless love that ignites because of and despite its impossibility. The romantic concept of love becomes explosive against the hardened enmity of the parental generation, for which it is worth it for the young lovers to even die.

Director Stefan Pucher, frequently invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen, is known for his sensual and playful Shakespeare productions. For the theater in Josefstadt, he dedicates himself to “Romeo und Julia” for the first time, bringing Shakespeare's radical ideal of love, which the two young people live, to the stage.
