After the resounding success of the production The Firebird/Carmina Burana, the Stadttheater, together with the Performing Academy Vienna, presents another evening that combines music, choral singing, and dance.

This time, choreographer Sabine Arthold and her students turn their attention to two popular American composers, whose diverse works range from musicals to sacred music, from cheerful jazz to grand choral music: George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein. In An American in Paris and in the Three Dance Episodes from the musical On the Town, Gershwin and Bernstein depict lively city life in a modern metropolis, where the pleasure of city dwellers occasionally turns into sensory overload.

This ambivalence creates space for Sabine Arthold's choreography, incorporating elements of jazz and tap dance, as well as modern dance, reflecting the search for meaning by modern individuals faced with a constantly overstimulated world. Bernstein's (anti?) hero, Candide, embarks on a search for happiness, traveling the world from one catastrophe to another, only to find joy in his garden in the end. Surprising musical parallels to the Candide Overture can be found in the Chichester Psalms. Bernstein composed this complex choral work for a performance at the cathedral in Chichester, in southern England, setting the Psalms he selected in Hebrew, reflecting his own Jewish heritage. Here, unbridled joy contrasts with dark shadows, humble hope with harmonious brotherhood.

Have you ever seen a 1.96-meter-tall white rabbit? Not just any rabbit, of course. A Puka. No? Don't worry - then you are in good company!

Veta Louise Simmons and her daughter Myrtle Mae also have no dealings with a representative of this species. And this, even though one of them lives under the same roof with them. The white Puka, who goes by the name Harvey, is in fact the best friend of Veta's brother Elwood. The two are inseparable. They prefer to spend their time in the neighborhood bars, drinking and talking. Wherever Elwood shows up, Harvey is not far away either. And as befits a man with good manners, Elwood introduces his friend to everyone. Much to the dismay of the relatives - because desperate Veta sees her good reputation (and her daughter's marriage prospects) in jeopardy. Elwood's forced commitment to the psychiatric hospital appears to her as a last resort. But she didn't count on Harvey...

Elwood and Harvey encourage us to think about normality and deviance, about subjective social conventions that are not set in stone. Iphigenie, daughter of Agamemnon, has been living in exile on Tauris for over ten years as a priestess of Diana. The goddess brought her there after her father attempted to sacrifice her. The Taurian king Thoas wants to marry her. When Iphigenie rejects his advances, he reinstates the law that she had abolished, to sacrifice all foreigners who arrive on Tauris to Diana. The first person to be affected by this barbaric new law turns out to be Iphigenie's brother Orestes. He wants to free his sister, if necessary by force, and take her back to Mycenae or - if necessary - flee with her secretly. This ambivalence creates space for Sabine Arthold's choreography, incorporating elements of jazz and tap dance, as well as modern dance, reflecting the search for meaning by modern individuals faced with a constantly overstimulated world. Bernstein's (anti?) hero, Candide, embarks on a search for happiness, traveling the world from one catastrophe to another, only to find joy in his garden in the end. The young Israeli theater maker Noam Brusilovsky and his team have already drawn attention to the unimaginable sexually, psychologically, and physically violent assaults on young people in Carinthia in the name of medicine with their production Nicht sehen at the Stadttheater Klagenfurt. The commissioned work was awarded the Nestroy Prize in 2022. Now, with their current project, they once again shed light on the invisible in Carinthia.

The focus is on stories from the region, showing that queer life in rural, patriarchal, and Catholic societies has always taken place despite all repression. "Queer" also refers to a crossing of boundaries because the once defamatory term resists the binary logic of genders, thus denoting a border region - just as Carinthia itself encompasses a multilingual and multi-ethnic border area between Austria, Slovenia, and Italy.

The stories of queer past and present are told. An outline of the oppression of people is sketched out, and the fiction of a queer alpine utopia is designed. It addresses meeting points of queer people in our region, the persecution of homosexuals in the Nazi era, the victims of the AIDS pandemic whose deaths were shamefully kept secret by their families. Well-known queer personalities from the region are also highlighted, as well as the threat faced by the queer community not only in Carinthia but also today.

All this is set within the framework of a folk festival: the relaxed, joyful gathering with music and dance, good food, beer, and apple juice, naturally made from Gravensteiner apples. A celebration: A colorful celebration of the moment, built on traditions and community.

Klaus Eckel is the German autobahn among cabaret artists. Unfortunately, he doesn't know any speed limits.
However, in 2023, the hyperactive wordsmith finally took a break from the parking lot of life and enjoyed a 9-month timeout! Doing nothing for the duration of a pregnancy! Completely free from the pandemic! And this should be a high achiever? Well, if everyone did the same! Countless punchlines have piled up. And punchlines are like dogs with full bladders.
